Pearl shapes

Pearls are natural wonders that are available in wide variety of shapes and sizes. The shape of pearls plays an important part in determining its value. You will hardly come upon perfect round shaped natural pearls in the market. You will find that pearls that are randomly shaped are cheaper than the round pearls.

Number of processes occurs when pearl is developing inside the oyster that will eventually determine the final shape of that pearl. If the irritant that exists inside the oyster in order to facilitate the pearl’s shape is round or spherical, then the pearl created will be spherical as well. On the other hand if the shape of the irritant is irregular then pearl is bound to be irregular in shape as well. Along with the shape of the irritant, the position of a pearl inside the oyster also determines the shape of pearl.

Following are few pearl shapes:
Spherical: These may be perfectly round or approximately round and are regarded to be classic among other pearls.
Symmetrical shapes are fairly balanced and regular. When you cut them apart in exactly middle then each part will be the mirror image of another half.
Baroque: These pearls are irregular or abstract and nonsymmetrical in nature.
Round pearls: Round pearls are hardly ever perfect spheres unless they are gems of quality. The shape of pearls depends upon the time duration for which the pearl remains within oyster. Round pearls are very unusual and are expensive. As they grow the shape also changes gradually. Mostly the south sea pearls are round pearls.
Off round pearls: ‘Off Round’ term is referred to the pearl which looks round by necked eyes but actually, they are slightly oval or flattened shape. They have fine luster same as that of the round shaped pearl.

Pearl Shapes are a significant factor in determining value. The most common shapes are irregular or baroque. A pearl's shape and quality are not dependent on each other. However, just like gemstones, certain shapes of pearls are quite rare making them quite valuable. You will find that perfectly spherical pearls are also rare making them priceless.

Pearl shapes

Pearl is cherished as a symbol of purity and elegance from centuries. People around the world use these pearls as jewelry or decorative objects. Pearls are the only gemstone obtained from animals. Pearls are collected from both, freshwater and marine water.

Since pearls are organic gemstones, they can occur in wide variety of shapes. Pearl’s shape depends upon factors inside the shell of mollusk like; shape of nucleus or position of pearl within the shell and many more. The shape of the pearl determines its value. Perfectly round pearl is very rare. There are mainly three categories of pearl shape; spherical, Symmetrical and Baroque.

Spherical shapes are nearly round; this shape is most familiar, classic shape of pearl. Symmetrical pearls are regular shaped pearls, if pearl is divided into two parts they can be divided into two equal halves and Baroque shapes are irregular and abstract.

Some basic pearl shapes are as follows:

Round: When anyone thinks about the Pearls, round is only shape that comes into the mind. These pearls are very rare. Perfectly round and unblemished they look which are very rare and expensive. They range from perfectly round to oval in shape.

Near Round: These pearls are not round but oval. These pearls are slightly flattened or elongated. These pearls belong to Spherical category.

Pearl Color

Pearl comes in wide array of colors from White to Black; you can have pearl of any shade in between white to black. Pearl color is not due to single factor, three factors are responsible for color of a pearl. Body color, Overtones and Orient are the three factors.

Body color is the prominent main color. It depends upon the type of oyster which produces it. For example- black lipped oyster produces black colored pearls. Body color may be anything from white, silver, golden, green, blue or as said earlier Black.

Overtones: Color that appears on top of pearl’s body color is called as Overtone. These overtone somewhat alters body color of pearl, It also add depth and glow to pearls natural color. Usually white pearls have rose pink overtone. It is not necessary that every pearl should have an overtone some pearls does not have overtone at all.

Orient: Orient is usually referred to shimmering iridescence or you can call it “play of color”. It can be a like rainbow or just subtle combination of colors like pink, green, silver and green. These caused by the way in which light is reflected through various thin layers of nacre.

Price of pearl usually does not depend upon color. But presence of overtone color and iridescence makes pearl more valuable. You can choose color that best suited to you.

Always remember few things while buying colored pearls. Always judge them against non – reflective white background, never judge pearls on black background. If possible compare pearl color in different lighting conditions like day light, fluorescent etc. If you are looking for matching pearls then it is better to take those previously bought pearls with you. Consider uniformity of colors. Many pearls are artificially colored by treatments like dying or irradiation. These treated pearls can be easily spot by looking for concentrations of color near the drilled hole.

Chinese pearls

Around 4000 years ago Chinese people discovered a most delicate gem which had brilliant shine, Pearl. China has the oldest pearl production tradition than anywhere in the world. It has been one of the important parts of Chinese culture.

Southern region of China has ideal breeding conditions so most of pearls produced in China come from southern part. 96% percent of peals in worldwide market are from China. China also exporting pearls to Japan and large quantity of Chinese pearls are used for Japanese pearl jewelry.

Pearl oyster require some unique living conditions like; diversity of water areas, less polluted river and sea water, cheap and rich feed for pearl oysters, compared to Japan there very few earthquake prone areas and most important very advanced pearl breeding techniques. Keshi pearls

Our nature is full of mystery. A variety of artistic and abstract things is nurtured by our nature. Keshi pearl is one of the true gifts given by nature. These pearls are unique and their method of formation is also very different from the usual pearl harvesting. They are the known as the by-products of the usual pearl cultivation process.
There are two ways in which a Keshi pearl can be formed. In the first method the pearl is formed when the oyster spits out the nucleus, before its development, in rejection. In the second method the nucleus fractures and forms into two pearl sacs of circles of nacre without a nucleus.
Keshi pearls are also known as ‘poppy seed pearls’ or just ‘seed pearls’ because in Japanese Keshi means poppy seeds. These pearls can be cultured in both, freshwater as well as saltwater. Keshi pearls vary in sizes and are usually small. These pearls are very rare because as soon as an oyster expels its nucleus, it is re-nucleated, prohibiting the formation of Keshi pearls.
Keshi pearls have a unique bright luster and are uncommon in orient, since they are composed only of solid nacre. These features make Keshi pearls unique and desirable for jewelers for their fancy designs.
White Keshi pearls are very affordable. They have opalescence and are bright silvery in color with a great luster. They are usually 8x6mm in size. Large Keshi white pearls are also available. Their sizes vary from about 9.5-15mm in length (also available in 11-12mm lengths) to 7-9mm in width. They are cup shaped elongated pearls.
Green Keshi pearls are very small in size golden green in color. Usually drilled from the center and its lengths varies from 3.5-6mm and run 2.5-3mm on the drilled dimension. Pink Keshi pearls are 6-8mm in length and are available in lovely shades of pink. Similar are natural color Keshi pearls with lengths ranging from 7.5mm to 8.5mm.
Keshi pearls are also available in silver with a metallic base color. They carry a very high opalescent character with uniformity in size. They are 7-8mm long and about 5.5mm wide. Golden shades are also popular and rich in luster and about 7-9.5mm in size.
Keshi pearls are used in jewelry like earrings, bracelets, necklaces and decorative broaches. They were unknown to the market for many years, but now they are gaining popularity for their shape, color and luster.
