Luster of pearl

Luster of pearl is actually a brilliance of pearl, glow and shine of pearl. Actually luster of pearl is most important value deciding factor of pearl, the greater and deeper the luster; higher is the price of pearl. High luster pearls show strong and sharp light reflection and also shows good contrast between dark and brighter areas of pearl. Always select pearl with high luster.

Pearl luster is a mysterious inner glow which seems to emanate from center of high quality pearl. This mystique luster is actually combination of surface reflection and glow which comes from within many layers of nacre.

Now main question arises how long that luster of pearl able to last? This question arises because even most lustrous pearls become yellowish and lose their luster after many years. Yellowing of pearl is natural process and this happens as nacre; the main component of pearl is made up of unstable mineral called Aragonite which eventually converts into calcite.

You can dip your pearls into mild solution of hydrochloric acid as they start turning yellow. Hydrochloric acid will dissolve outer layer of calcite. This will expose underneath layer of Aragonite. But if your pearls have been yellow for long time then it would be difficult to restore their original color.

Pearls are gorgeous gemstone that can be cherished for many years, so you should take good care of your pearls. Here are some tips to retain luster and glow of pearls.

Do not use chemical cleansers or toothpaste to wash pearls ad it can damage surface of pearls. Use very mild detergent to wash pearls, you can use gentle baby shampoo.

Don’t wear pearls while swimming or taking shower or when there is possibility of sweating, as sweat can mask luster of pearls.
